By far the rarest of the Vatican City postal issues are the Provisional Surcharges of 1934. These were overprinted on the Pius XI stamps of 1929, and only 18,000 each were made of the two high values. Numerous forgeries have been clandestinely overprinted for this issue, but the group of four of these in this collection is genuine, and a certificate is enclosed at the end of this volume. Actually there were two printings of this issue - one in 1934 and one in 1937. These can be distinguished by the spacings of the surcharges, and in this case all four stamps are of the first printing.
