We study ants as model systems for understanding physiological regulation across levels of organization, from cells to complex societies. Ants are among the most ecologically dominant groups of animals on the planet and there are about 20,000 species worldwide, but we know little about the diversity and natural history of ants in Rhode Island.

A colony of needle ants was discovered while surveying the ant species on campus. Previously, its northern-most range in the USA was thought to be in New York and this is the first time they have been found in New England.
