2015 Cleary Lecture: Liberation Theology Today by Gustavo Gutiérrez, OP

 

The Political Science Department and the Latin American Studies Program are pleased to announce that the third annual Edward Cleary, O.P. Memorial Lecture will feature world-renowned Peruvian theologian and Dominican friar, Gustavo Gutiérrez, O.P. Gutiérrez is best known as the father of Liberation theology. His groundbreaking work, A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, Salvation (1971), set a theological agenda for the last half century that sought to expand theology into a socially transforming science. Gutiérrez spent much of his life living and working among the poor and oppressed of Lima. His many honors include the John Cardinal O’Hara Professorship of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, a membership in the Peruvian Academy of Language, the Legion of Honor from the French government, election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Dominican Order’s Master of Sacred Theology, and the Spain’s Príncipe de Asturias award.

At this event, Providence College will confer Gutiérrez an honorary doctorate.
