In Spring 2023, students in Professor Jen Illuzzi and Professor Sean Holley’s DWC 202 Colloquium “Race, Gender, and Sports: The Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” created digital posters spotlighting the history of race, gender and sports at Providence College. During the semester, they focused on the ways that gender and race have shaped and been shaped by, larger US conversations about sports and its place in our social lives. For their final project, they applied that knowledge to analyzing how those larger national conversations impacted our campus community by utilizing the PC archives to explore pivotal figures in PC sports history like Malcolm Brown and Helen Bert, issues like the expansion of women’s sports on campus, individual sports like football and basketball, and even the history of sport uniforms.
