Intro to Creative Writing (ENG 185) Chapbook Project

Fall 2020 Intro to Creative Writing Chapbook Project

  • Each year, students in my poetry and prose poetry workshops submit a small pamphlet, otherwise known as a chapbook, as their final project. They are asked to consider their writing as a body of work, often with recurring themes, rather than as individual assignments. They design their own book cover; give order to work written and revised throughout the term; provide an author photo; bio; and blurbs (a short statement of praise) written by two fellow workshop participants. This year, I invited my Intro to Creative Writing students to take part in this project as well. They incorporated not only poetry but also short fiction—all based on writing prompts I’d given them during the term. This year, due to Covid-19, all chapbooks were submitted as digital files. The end results were just as varied and imaginative.

This chapbook shows vulnerability and touches on topics that I deem extremely relatable for people my age. I enjoyed my creative writing class and the insight it had to offer. This project allowed me to expand my writing horizons with a mixture of poetry and short stories.
