This project examines how memorialization practices – such as Memorial Day, veterans’ organizations, and monuments – developed in the small towns of America in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Focusing in particular on Norfolk County, Massachusetts, the project shows how small towns memorialized soldiers who fought in the American Civil War and how these memorial practices changed during and after the Great War as communities grappled with the loss of life in a war fought overseas. Drawing on research from local historical archives, the project offers an original and untold narrative of war, memorialization, and local history.
