Description

The Blackstone River Valley birthed the American Industrial Revolution with the opening of Slater Mill in 1793. The industrialization of the United States became quickly linked with the emerging changes in transportation. As the automobile became the predominate form of transportation at the turn of the 20th century, manufacturing in the Blackstone River Valley saw a major shift in workers’ lifestyles. This video looks at the how the Ashton Viaduct is representative of this greater change in the lifestyle of the working peoples of mills in the Blackstone River Valley. By showing how the changes in transportation coincided with changes in manufacturing in the Blackstone River Valley, this video shows viewers how the Industrial Revolution is linked with the Transportation Revolution. As the Blackstone Canal and Providence & Worcester Railroad were introduced to the valley, manufacturing increased, leading to the Rhode Island system of manufacturing. But the introduction of the automobile led to a decline in the Rhode Island system, coinciding with the disappearance of manufacturing in the valley, leading to the many recreational opportunities throughout the valley seen today.
