Twelfth Night 2012, phonebox construction photos

October 4, 2012

This scenic replica British telephone kiosk was built for the Department of Theatre, Dance & Film’s fall 2012 production of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. It was modeled on the K2 phone box designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924 and used exclusively in London. While the original was constructed of cast iron and solid teak, this scenic piece was made with a combination of fir, pine, Plexiglas and plywood. Wire mesh, muslin, and plasters were used additionally for the dome.

Before construction began, research was done to determine scale. Once a few key dimensions were established, the rest of the measurements were extrapolated. Complete construction drawings were drafted, followed by materials purchasing and assembly. All elements of the phone kiosk were fabricated by the scene shop, with the exception of trim moldings and lettering.
