In Spring 2023, students in Dr. Alyssa Lopez's course, “The Civil Rights Movement: 1955-1975”, created zines as their final projects. After a semester of learning a more complicated narrative of the civil rights movement, the students were encouraged to design and share a zine to offer that knowledge to more members of the Providence College community. Meant to focus on just one theme/person/event/organization during this pivotal moment in history, and with total creative control, the students made zines [some digital, some physical] that emphasize voting rights, Black women activists, leaders like Malcolm X and Fred Hampton, and student activism at Providence College, among other fascinating topics. In addition to sharing these digital zines here, students also distributed these zines to the campus community.
