Jacques Sternberg, publishing since the 1950's, is little known in the USA despite a substantial output of novels, tales, plays, and studies on humor, science fiction, and erotica. Much of his work is in the form of brief pieces, which, for all their whimsy and black humor, reflect an obsession with human frailty, fate, and inescapable mortality. "Knit-Wit or, The Thread of the Story" is from Contes a dormir sans vous © 1990 by Editions Denoel. ["Contributor Note" from original publication, 1997.]
